Roots + Rhythm

DANCE INTENSIVE

Breakdown of the Roots & Rhythm Intensive:

Students will study all the three dance styles everyday, and also have a short history/Q&A session each day to give a more integrated learning experience. The Intensive will culminate in a showcase on Friday for the students’ families. 

Class level placement will be determined based on Tap Dance technique level. 

Classes are Taught by Karida Griffith Walker & Derrell Sekou Soumah Walker

 

2 Levels – Intermediate & Advanced

Ages 10 and up

* Tap Dance

* South African Gumboot Dance

* West African Dance – includes daily live drumming accompaniment!

Rate: $250

* Class sizes will be limited to 25 students per level. No exceptions! *

 

Daily Class Breakdown

3:00 – 4:10pm Class 1

4:10 – 5:20pm Class 2

5:20 – 5:50pm Food & Chat

5:50 – 7:00pm Class 3

**Final Showcase will be on Friday, July 31st at 6:15pm**

Teacher Bios!

 

Karida Griffith Walker grew up dancing in Portland, OR. After moving to New York and completing her business degree at New York University, Karida pursued her professional dance career. Her performing credits include the Radio City Rockettes, Cirque du Soleil, Dorrance Dance Tap Company and more. She has been a teacher at Broadway Dance Center in NYC, a professor for Tap Dance at Pace University. Karida has also developed a ground-breaking Online Tap Teacher Training Program for teachers around the world. 

 

Derrell Sekou Soumah Walker grew up in Portland, OR and began to study African Dance as a young adult. To deepen his knowledge, he traveled many times to Guinea, West Africa, to study both dance and drumming, and is now a rare artist who has achieved mastery in both dance and drum. For more than 10 years, Derrell Sekou has shared his passion for West African Dance & Drum as a teacher in Portland Public Schools, and with his own performing company, Sebe Kan.

Karida & Derrell were married in 2015, collaborate as artists, and have three daughters.
